Welcome to
Gloucestershire College.
The best advice I give to students considering higher education is choose something you enjoy. Because with
passion comes potential to succeed and, ultimately, pride in your career.
From having an interest in forensics and studying sociology and criminal justice, to achieving my PhD in
subcultural theories, I was inspired to teach by my lecturer. I started lecturing at universities and FE colleges
simultaneously, before deciding on teaching full time in colleges, which gave me time to build better working
relationships with my students.
Since starting at Gloucestershire College as a Sociology Lecturer I've held various roles, including Personal
Tutor, Head of School and Staff Governor, but the reasons I'm still here 30 years on remain the same. GC
provides a stepping stone to specialise in what you want to do; my peers hold the same values and passion as
I do for teaching and assessment; lecturers have invaluable industry experience and contacts, and together
we put student experience first.
For me, student experience means helping you to grow in confidence and create a work-worthy portfolio,
honing those transferable skills employers want and gaining tangible work experience to put on your CV.
With courses covering everything from Media, Business and Early Years to Engineering, Computing and
Education, studying higher education at GC will get you closer to your career with minimal life upheaval,
flexible options and more support than university, right on your doorstep.
So think about what you will enjoy in your future, and I hope to welcome you in September.
