Therapeutic Counselling
Diploma Level 4
The Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling course is ideal for those who wish to achieve a professional
qualification as a Counsellor. Successful completion of this course will enable you to provide a
therapeutic counselling service within the context of an agency's service framework.
This diploma provides training in vocational and professional
counselling and is a competence-based course, which highlights
the development of skilled practice via experiential learning. It is
specifically aimed at training for employment in an agency. It uses
Martha Stark's Modes of Therapeutic Action framework for integration
of person-centred and psychodynamic theory and skills.
There are seven mandatory units, including working ethically, safely
and professionally as a counsellor; counselling relationships; client
diversity; user-centred approaches; self-awareness and reflective
working as a counsellor.
In addition to the College fees, you should budget for a minimum of
40 sessions of personal therapy (typically £50 per session); supervision
- most agencies provide supervision, but sometimes supplementary
supervision is necessary and can be organised privately at around
£45 per hour; and books, photocopying, travel, childcare, etc.
For further information about this course, see the awarding body's
website at www.cpcab.co.uk/qualifications/tc-l4
Although this course is not accredited by the BACP (British Association
for Counselling and Psychotherapy), it meets their requirements for
course accreditation and prepares student counsellors for individual
accreditation (see www.bacp.co.uk/accreditation). You will need
to complete 100 hours of counselling work in an agency to pass the
course.
