I've heard that students take more
ownership of their own learning at
college; how can I be sure that my
young person is doing enough work
to pass their course, and will I be kept
informed about their progress?
Each student has a dedicated Student
Mentor and lecturer who will meet with
them regularly to discuss their progress
and any support that they may need in
order to succeed. You will be provided
with the contact details of your young
person's Student Mentor and lecturer when
they start at college.
Each course will also organise a parents'/
carers' evening for you to meet with our
lecturers, and progress reports are sent
home throughout the year.
Will my young person need to do maths and
English at college?
The government wants all school leavers to
have a minimum GCSE grade 4 or C in maths
and English. Students who carry on in full-time
education post-16 and don't already have an
A to C or 4 to 9 in these subjects are required
to continue their study. Students will be enrolled
on to functional skills or GCSE courses,
depending upon prior achievement.
How many days each week will my young person
be in college?
This will vary depending on the particular course
and level they choose to take. As a general rule,
full-time students are in class for between 17 and
19 hours per week, over a period of 32 to 34 weeks.
In addition to this, all students have a full week
timetabled once a year for an Industry Placement
Week and are expected to take part in work
experience, social action projects and get involved in
the many enrichment opportunities available through
the Student Development Programme.
How much will it cost and what financial assistance
is available?
Students aged 18 and under when they start their course
do not have to pay any tuition fees.
However, in some cases students will be asked to pay a
contribution towards the cost of educational visits, books,
equipment and materials. These costs will vary, depending
on the particular course your young person chooses to
take. A wide range of financial support is available to
assist with these costs. For further details or advice, please
call our Student Support Team on 0345 155 2020.
How do most students get to college?
Stagecoach offers a new student bus pass, with routes
available to all campuses. Tickets are easily managed
through the Stagecoach Bus App. We encourage students
to cycle to college, where possible, and offer secure bike
storage across our campuses. For more information, visit
our website or call our Student Support Team on 0345
155 2020.
My young person would like to go to university; if they
complete a technical qualification can they still apply to
university?
Yes, 95% of universities accept BTEC qualifications and
hundreds of GC students progress to university every
year.
My young person would like to apply for an
apprenticeship - do you find the employer?
We work with over 1,300 employers in the county
to deliver apprenticeships. Live vacancies are
constantly being updated and advertised at

What happens if my young person feels that they
are not on the right course?
If your young person is unsure that the course
is right for them they should let their Student
Mentor know at the earliest opportunity.
At the beginning of the year in September
there is the possibility to change subject but
this is dependent on places being available
on the course and their reason for wanting
to change.
My young person has additional support at
school. Will they still get help at college?
If your young person has additional
learning support requirements, please
highlight this on their application form and
we can arrange for support and specialist
equipment to be available from their
first day with us. Our support teams are
always happy to discuss your young
